We study some qualitative properties of a well-known free boundary problem modelling strong segregation of N competing populations in planar domains. The main goal is to show that generically the domain partitions into subdomains with only triple junctions, meaning that at most 3 populations meet at any point of the free boundary.
This is a joint work with F. Lanzara, E. Montefusco and V. Nesi (Sapienza).
